Hertfordshire Walks
Aldbury is a real Hertfordshire gem for walkers, and this page brings together four lovely route options to suit different moods and energy levels, all starting from this picture-perfect village on the edge of the Chilterns.
Whether you fancy a short but rewarding climb up into the beautiful Ashridge Estate for big views, woodland paths and the famous monument, prefer a gentler ramble west through open countryside and past the golf course, or want to combine both for a longer, more adventurous day out, there’s something here for everyone. Some routes are hilly, others more forgiving, but all share a lovely sense of space, classic Chiltern scenery and a relaxed village feel.
Best of all, every walk ends back in Aldbury, where the excellent The Greyhound Inn awaits - popular for good reason, so it’s worth booking ahead - and with Tring station nearby, it’s an easy and rewarding day out on foot.

Aldbury walk 01
This first route is a lovely short, but hilly, walk from the pretty village of Aldbury. You'll first climb up the steep path up into the Ashridge Estate where you'll enjoy the Monument before strolling around a section of the delightful woodlands on the estate.
After that, you'll then descend back down to the village for your reward at the wonderful country pub in the village.

Difficult to find parking in the village as it was so busy. Path around Ashridge was also quite busy. Nice cafe in the village hall open Friday to Monday.
Quite a steep hill to start (the kids complained for this) but this levelled out when arriving at Ashridge monument/cafe. The promise of ice cream at the top did the trick in encouraging the little legs to keep moving! For us, it was a rainy Sunday afternoon, but it was still lovely. I imagjne even nicer in dry weather though!
Aldbury walk 02
This second route option is the choice for you if you don't want to tackle the climb up into the Ashridge Estate. Instead of climbing up into the estate, it heads west from the village for a walk around the pretty countryside and outskirts of the golf course. There is a small section of climbing on this route, but it's not too bad.
As with all of our routes from Aldbury, there is a lovely pub in the village to enjoy!

Lovely walk. Beautiful scenery. Dog friendly. A couple of points to have your dog on lead. Recommend!
A lovely walk, the car park may be closed at start but plenty of parking on the streets within metres, an easy route to follow, through three parks, shady spots, water for a splash or two along the day, a woodland and some fields so really varied however no major wow to it we enjoyed it - if taking a packed lunch there is a bench by the pub :-)

Worth a stop at The Grehound when you finish the walk. Lovely dog friendly pub
Lovely route through fields, down little laneways and around the edge of a golf course. We met other walkers, cyclists and horse riders but not overly busy. One main road to cross. Lunch at The Greyhound Inn was excellent. At the end of the walk, we also passed another pub (The Trooper), which looked lovely.
Nice, quiet route - took us about 1.5hrs at a medium pace

This third route option is basically an extension of the first walk. You still climb up into the beautiful Ashridge Estate, but this option takes you deeper into the majestic woodlands here and you'll enjoy a walk along the impressive Prince's Riding avenue of trees.

First-hand experiences
Our first walk using this app, and discovered a route that we didnt know right on our doorstep - and now enjoying a pint in The Greyhound! After a steep climb for a few hundred the walk levelled out, with a pleasant meander through the beech woodland. Pleasant, but fairly featureless - no ‘stunning views’ as a reward for the climb, but plenty of places for refreshment en route.
If you don’t mind a good hill at the beginning, and you like woods, then this is a perfect walk for you!
Aldbury walk 04
This final route option is basically the second and third routes joined together to give you an epic adventure in this lovely part of Hertfordshire.
You'll enjoy a walk around the countryside to the west of the village, circumventing the golf course, and you'll climb up into the wonderful Ashridge Estate for a majestic woodland walk, a stroll along Prince's riding and a visit to the monument.
Finally, you'll also enjoy the quaint village of Aldbury itself, with it's fantastic pub that does get busy, so book ahead!
