Hertfordshire Walks
These walks around Amwell Nature Reserve offer a peaceful escape into some of Hertfordshire’s best riverside and wetland scenery.
The shorter route is a gentle wander down to the lakes and viewpoints of the reserve, perfect for wildlife spotting, while the longer options head out through Easneye Wood, open countryside and sections of the Hertfordshire Way.
The longer routes also take in the village of Stanstead Abbots, where a choice of pubs and eateries awaits, before a relaxing stretch beside the River Lee brings you back to the start.

This first route option is a lovely short adventure that takes you down to the wonderful Amwell Nature Reserve and back.
You'll enjoy some riverside walking and some pretty lakes and the viewpoint half way around the route is a great spot for wildlife lovers.

Perfect short walk for a young family. Pushchair friendly. Can be a bit tricky finding a car parking space
The walk through this path is amazing!
Luckily...We got one of the 3 car park spaces on our 3rd pass. Very pretty short walk along the river and lakes with plenty of birds to see

Walk information
This second longer and more varied route option heads in the opposite direction and visits the pretty Easneye wood that you'll find to the east of Ware.
Once you've walked through the woods, you'll embark on an adventure into the open countryside, and along a section of the Hertfordshire Way, where you'll enjoy some nice views.
You'll then walk through the village of Stanstead Abbots where there are a large selection of pubs and eateries available, before taking you on a nice walk alongside the River Lee to get back to the start point.

We started in Stanstead Abbots due to limited parking and started at the canal, was lovely, the end bit was a bit boring. Not as many animel as i’d like, but few cows :-) x
Great walk alongside a river. Goes through Stanstead Abbott which has cafes, pubs, Co-op. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Not much parking at start on a sunny day, but could mzyve drive onto village and start from there.
Rocky, uneven paths. Not the most scenic walk. Only parking for 3 cars at start, so you’re better off parking at Stansted Abbot and starting there.

We enjoyed walk 1 so much that we carried on with walk 2. This was a beautiful walk- fields, woodland, rivers and lakes. Dogs had to be on leads near wldlife but there were enough off-lead areas. The Red Lion had a welcoming fire and good service but probably wouldn’t order food again as everything tasted deep fried or greasy.
Walked in August. Took the Amwell Walkway under Hollycross Road a little way along left through a meadow full of wild flowers to rejoin the path. Saw butterflies and a pair of Red Kites circling above a field. Picked a few wild plums to take home.
Great 2.5 hour walk with lot of scenery variety.
The Red Lion pub was a great place to stop. Staff were super friendly and welcoming.
In view of the very limited parking at the designated start point, I think it would be better to start at the car park off Stansted Abbots High Street.
We started this walk from the free car park in Stanstead Abbotts instead and route very easily picked up.
As stated, very limited parking, but a great walk, loads of water - lakes and rivers, woodland and open area. Highly recommended!!
