Ware Walks and Route Maps

Ware walk, Hertfordshire

Ware is a market town on the River Lea in east Hertfordshire, and the water is what shapes it. The Lee Navigation runs right through the centre, with towpaths, locks and moorings that make an easy backdrop for a walk. The town has a long history as a trading point on the river, and today its high street and waterside have a good mix of pubs, cafes and eateries, so a stop for refreshments is never far away.

We have five circular walks here, ranging from 1.4 to 6.2 miles, and all of them are waterside and fairly flat. The shortest is a gentle loop along the canal and through the town, ideal for a quick leg stretch. Walks 2 and 3 are around 3 miles, one heading east where the Lee Navigation and the River Lea run side by side, the other west along the towpath and back through the Kings Mead nature reserve and along the New River Path. Each finishes with a stroll through the town.

For longer outings, the 5-mile walk follows the New River Path to St Margarets and Stanstead Abbotts, then returns along the towpath. The 6.2-mile route links Ware with the historic market town of Hertford via Kings Mead, and is a good half-day walk. If you would rather not walk both ways, the train from Hertford to Ware is one stop, and in summer a boat trip also runs between the two towns. Ware station is handy for the start of every route.

Walker review

Walked at the end of Feb with 2.5 year old. Nice easy walk for small legs without getting too tired - took a lot longer than 30 minutes though! She loved watching the ducks, geese and swans, and enjoyed watching a boat go through the lock. The path is a little muddy in places, but trainers would have coped just fine. Plenty of toilets along the high street part of the route, but nothing along the river. Free parking in Asda, which could easily be incorporated into the walk.

This second route option is a lovely waterside adventure on some footpaths that you'll find to the east of Ware.

You'll first head over a bridge and then follow a pretty stretch of the River Lee Navigation canal that goes through Ware.

After a while, you'll then cross over a bridge and then follow a loop of walking that tracks more of the River Lee Navigation on one side, and the River Lea on the other.

You'll then head back to the start point, but heading through the market town of Ware itself this time where you'll find plenty of eateries, cafes and pubs.

Lovely well laid paths alongside lovely water ways and lake side. Very peaceful, lots of butterflies, birds, ducks and dragonflies. An old fashion walk - brilliant .

Walker review

It gets a but squelchy in parts and its a very narrow path on the 2nd half of the route - but thoroughly enjoyable.

Walker review

Bridges and steps make it unsuitable for wheelchairs. Light buggies might be ok.

Lovely time. When you cross the the train tracks and enter the fields there are sections of the path that are overgrown/nettley (we went in June) however there is an alternative path that re-joins the route so you can avoid the worst of it. Lots of good birds. Would recommend Waterside Inn :-) x

Walker review

Lovely walk in the sun. Some very narrow pathways with stinging nettles to watch out for. Only an issue once, when others wanted to go past in opposite direction. Overall good clear route

Lovely walk! If you want to do the longer routes you will need to find an alternative car park as the suggested car park is a max hour 3 stay. We parked by the station instead.

Lovely autumnal walk. Challenging for a pushchair to get through the gates. Had to empty and lift over

Ware walk 05

This final walk option is an epic adventure that visits two pretty market towns, enjoys a long walk along a peaceful canal towpath and visits the Kings Mead nature reserve.

The walk starts by taking you out of Ware and then joins the New River Path as it heads into the Kings Mead Nature Reserve.

After a long walk through the reserve, enjoying the wildlife as you go, you'll eventually meet up with the River Lee Navigation canal and head into the historic market town of Hertford.

The walk then takes you on a tour of the lovely town before rejoining the canal for a long and sweeping canal-side towpath walk back to Ware.

You could walk one way to Hertford, and then get the train back from Hertford to Ware which is just one stop down the line. Alternatively, in the summer months, there is a boat trip running between the towns as well.
