Loynton Moss is a nature reserve in Staffordshire with a place in local conservation history. It was the first reserve of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, which was founded on 5 August 1969 as the Staffordshire Nature Conservation Trust and now looks after 27 sites. The walks here start on Pinfold Lane, pass through the reserve and run beside the Shropshire Union Canal Newport Branch.

We have two routes to choose from. The first is a short, almost level circuit of about a mile through woodland, which makes it an easy outing for an hour or so. The second is a longer one-way walk of about 3.4 miles that spends much more of its time beside the canal, and passes the hamlet of Norbury Junction, where there is a pub and a tea room. It finishes at a bridge on Newport Road, so you will need to plan your return.

Both walks are gentle, with very little climbing. For more walks like this, take a look at the Staffordshire Walks app, which covers routes right across the county.

A short, gentle circuit that gives you a taste of Loynton Moss, the nature reserve that gives the walk its name. It was the first reserve of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, so it is a place with real conservation history.

The route starts on Pinfold Lane and soon reaches the reserve, where a stretch of woodland sits alongside the Shropshire Union Canal Newport Branch. The ground is almost completely flat, with barely any climbing, so it suits an unhurried stroll with time to look and listen.

A longer, mostly level walk that links the Loynton Moss nature reserve with the Shropshire Union Canal and the hamlet of Norbury Junction.

Loynton Moss was the first nature reserve of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, and the early part of the walk is a pleasant mix of woodland and canalside scenery.

Much of the route runs beside the water, following the Shropshire Union Canal Newport Branch. Around the halfway point you reach Norbury Junction, where The Junction Inn and the Old Wharf Tea Rooms make a handy stop for refreshments.

The climbing is slight, just a few gentle rises. The walk is one way and finishes at a bridge on Newport Road, so plan how you will get back to the start.
