Ilam is a village in the Staffordshire Peak District, at the entrance to the Manifold Valley and close to Dovedale. There has been a settlement here since Saxon times, but most of what you see today was built in the 19th century, after the industrialist Jesse Watts-Russell bought the estate in 1820. Many of the buildings are in a distinctive Swiss chalet style, quite unlike the usual local stone cottages.

The two walks here start by the Manifold Tea Room and explore the village and the surrounding countryside. Along the way you pass the Saxon Cross, the Gothic Revival Ilam Cross, a memorial to Mary Watts-Russell, and the Church of the Holy Cross, where the shrine of St Bertram is kept. The shorter walk is a gentle circuit by the River Manifold and through the village. The longer route crosses the river at Rushley Bridge and climbs onto higher ground before returning to Ilam, so it needs a little more energy.

Ilam Short Village Walk

Walk distance
1½ miles
Time
30 mins
Route type
Circular

A short, gentle wander around the village of Ilam and along the edge of the River Manifold, with plenty to look at for its length. It starts close to the Manifold Tea Room and soon passes the Saxon Cross, before continuing to Hinkley Wood and the river.

On the way back, the route follows Ilam Moor Lane into the village, where the Gothic Revival Ilam Cross stands as a memorial to Mary Watts-Russell. It finishes by the Church of the Holy Cross, which holds the shrine of St Bertram. The climbs are slight, so it suits an easy hour or so.

Ilam and Rushley Bridge Hill Walk

Walk distance
3¾ miles
Time
2 hours
Route type
Circular

A longer, more varied circuit that goes beyond the village and up onto higher ground. It begins near the Manifold Tea Room and passes the Saxon Cross and Hinkley Wood, then follows Lodge Lane to Rushley Bridge, where the route crosses the River Manifold.

From the river there is a step and sustained climb to tackle, which lifts the walk above the valley before it heads back down towards Ilam.

The return follows Ilam Moor Lane and takes in the Gothic Revival Ilam Cross, the village and the Church of the Holy Cross, home to the shrine of St Bertram.

Expect a good morning or afternoon out, with some effort needed on the uphill sections.
