Tewin is a charming Hertfordshire village between Welwyn and Hertford, surrounded by rolling farmland, peaceful woodland and quiet country lanes. With two welcoming pubs, The Rose and Crown and The Plume of Feathers, it’s a lovely starting point for a countryside walk.

Our seven circular walks range from 1.6 to 8 miles, with something for everyone. Four shorter, easy routes explore different parts of the countryside, including Lamb Dell Wood, Tewin Bury Farm and its cafés, with plenty of opportunities for refreshments along the way.

For a longer adventure, the 3.4 and 4.8-mile routes combine beautiful countryside with woodland paths and a delightful paddling spot. The full 8-mile walk ventures through Burnham Green, passing farm shops and The White Horse pub, perfect for a rewarding morning or afternoon exploring.

Nice little stroll with nice drink at pub at the end

Walker review

Sadly the pub is closed

Walker review

Very nice stroll, perfect for the dog. Got to put them on the lead now and again for crossing roads but only briefly. There were pigs and cows and alpacas on the walk by the church which is nice! Its an easy walk which is pretty flat the whole way.

Walker review

Nice short family walk with dog.

Enjoyable route. Easy to follow and splendid pub at the end.Good mix of woodland and open countryside.

Nice scenic walk. Lovely for dogs but be aware of some quiet roads that creep up on you if your dog is off lead....Really warm welcome at The Rose and Crown pub!

Tewin walk 03

Tewin Bury Farm loop

This third option is another short loop and this one explores the countryside to the south of the village. You'll still enjoy some pretty countryside on this route and the village itself with it's pub. However, the main reason to choose this route is it visits the Tewin Bury Farm where you'll find a nice farm shop and various restaurants and cafes.

Lovely walk, great stop off at Tewin Bury Farm for refreshments.

Walker review

Good walk. Only took us 40 mins of walking with a lovely stop for coffee.

Walker review

We enjoyed the walk today. It was dog friendly but there are some hidden roads so keep your dog close/on a lead for those sections. The Horsebox only had drinks and no cakes/pastries when we went but was a nice half way stop.

Tewin walk 04

Tewin Countryside Loop

Walk distance
2¼ miles
Time
1 hour
Route type
Circular

This is our last short walk option from Tewin. This one heads west from the village and it's more of a simple open countryside walk with a long stretch heading out into the arable farmland there. It's a less varied walk, but great for exercise and fresh air.

This option also has the added benefit of visiting both pubs in the village in the last stretch of the walk as you head back to the start through Upper Tewin.

The majority of the walk involves walking around and then across a massive field. We started at the Plume of Feathers pub which served nice food.

The fifth route option from Tewin basically stitches a few of the shorter walks together to create a slightly longer and varied adventure in the countryside around the village.

This one enjoys the long stretches of open countryside from the fourth walk, the cafes and farm shop from the third walk, the views and pretty Lamb Dell Wood from the second walk, and of course the village of Tewin itself with it's nice pub.

Quite a peaceful walk considering the number of footpaths and walks in the area. Surprisingly dry under foot, even with all the recent rain.

Walker review

Good walk. A choice of two places to eat on the route both of which are good but you would be best to book a table at both places if you want to be sure of a table....Good for dogs.

Walker review

Very enjoyable walk, and there was lots of open countryside which was good. It could be muddy in places when the weather changes. The Tewin farm refreshments was a nice break about half way round.

Lovely walk with a nice stop for coffee and cake

Lovely family day on this walk!

Lovely walk. Good spacing between refreshment places. Easy to park. Can be muddy after raining.

Walker review

Really lovely walk - will do the longer version next time. Finished off in the Rose.

Walker review

Excellent walk, great lunch at the Rose

I always start my routes from Tewinbury Farm instead of the village green.

Tewin walk 06

Tewin, Countryside and Water Bridge

Walk distance

This sixth route option is basically the same route as the fifth route, but the open countryside section of the walk is extended by a couple of kilometres for those of you that want to stretch your legs a bit more on your walk.

There is also a little there-and-back extension to the walk that takes you to the lovely bridge and paddling place that the kids and dogs will love!

Really enjoyable walk, especially the detour to the river

Walker review

Great walk. AppleWatch clocked in 5.2 miles so slightly longer, and a challenging hill toward the end. Very pretty; overlaps parts of Digswell walk.

Walker review

Possible to adapt it to start/finish at the Plume of Feathers

Tewin walk 07

Long Tewin to Burnham Green Loop

Walk distance
8 miles
Time
4 hours
Route type
Circular

This final route option is an epic adventure in the wonderful countryside between the pretty villages of Tewin and Burnham Green.

You'll enjoy the countryside, farm shops and woodland that you'll find in the shorter walks from Tewin, but the walk then heads north to the village of Burnham Green where you'll find a lovely pub about half way around the walk.

It then heads back through various woodlands and more pretty countryside to the start point in Tewin where there is a another pub if you need more refreshments.

Like the 6th route, there is also a little there-and-back extension to the walk that takes you to the lovely bridge and paddling place that the kids and dogs will love!

Good route overall. You can see a rare chalk stream habitat, and I also spotted llamas, rabbits, and bulls.......Only the first part runs alongside a main road and has some noise pollution, so if that bothers you, you may prefer a different route.

Walker review

This is a nice long walk, it is wuite hilly, i woukd describe it as lots of small hills, rather then long or large climbs. It is picturesque in parts but there are better slightly shorter walks with more picturesque landscapes. Still worth doing the walk if you want to push yourself.

Walker review

Tewin Walk 7...One of our best walks yet from the App. Tewin and the surrounding area was busy, but it was a sunny, Easter Sunday. A fairy strenuous walk with a few hills, but definitely worth the effort. We also did the small extension down to bridge as it’s only about half a mile extra in total. A little after 4 1/2 miles you have The White Horse at Burnham Green which looked good but packed. Alternately, there are plenty of benches on the Green to have a break.

Walker review

Very nice walk. Lovely countryside not too difficult. I did the full 8 miles and it was worth it. Lots of nice things to look at and hardly any people. A few good pubs on route, It was ideal weather so that made it a good as well.
