Derbyshire Walks
These walks visit one of the most well-known viewpoints on the eastern side of the Peak District, where the land rises to the edge of the Derwent Valley before dropping away into a wide landscape of woodland, reservoirs and hills.
The shorter route goes directly to Surprise View and back, while the longer walk forms a circular route across open moorland and gritstone edges, passing Over Owler Tor and Millstone Edge before reaching the viewpoint itself.

Walk information
This quick 'there-and-back' walk leads to one of the most famous viewpoints on the eastern edge of the Peak District.
Surprise View sits high above the Derwent Valley, where the landscape opens out into a broad panorama of woodland, reservoirs, and the surrounding hills.
Set within the Eastern Moors, the viewpoint is part of a landscape shaped by tough millstone grit and open moorland.

If you want a longer adventure, then this second route takes you on a popular circular walk that explores the rugged gritstone edges above the Derwent Valley.
Around Over Owler Tor, weathered blocks of millstone grit sit among open moorland, shaped by millions of years of wind and rain.
Then, you'll visit Millstone Edge that forms part of the dramatic escarpment that defines the eastern side of the national park.
The highlight of the walk is then Surprise View, one of the area’s best-known viewpoints, where the land drops away to reveal wide views across woodland, reservoirs, and the valley below.
