This short route offers a gentle introduction to the charming Wiltshire town of Mere, weaving through its quiet streets and historic corners.

There will be time to soak up the character of the town itself, with its stone cottages, old inns and relaxed, small-town feel, and then the path also leads to the atmospheric site of Mere Castle, once a Norman stronghold overlooking the settlement below.

Walker review

Great walk, toilets at car park free parking. Came early Sunday so nothing open but lots of shops and cafes and pubs if you time it better. Slight incline now and then, some steps Goats on hill so dogs on leads at all times. Beautiful views!

This longer route from the town of Mere is a proper leg-stretcher, climbing steadily out of the streets and around base of the dramatic slopes of Great Bottom offering great views as you walk.

Later, the route drops back towards town and passes the historic site of Mere Castle, once a Norman stronghold overlooking the settlement.

Back in Mere, the nice pubs provide a well-earned finish after this rewarding, hillier outing.
