Wiltshire Walks
These walks explore the countryside around Bishops Cannings, combining stretches of the Kennet and Avon Canal with village paths and historic earthworks such as the Wansdyke.
From a shorter circular route with canal views and village highlights to a longer, more adventurous option with climbs and wider panoramas, there’s a good mix of scenery and interest throughout.
Both routes pass through Bishops Cannings, where The Crown Inn offers a welcome place to pause and finish the walks.

Walk information
This beautiful circular walk takes in a section of the Kennet and Avon Canal, it visits the Wansdyke bank - thought to have been constructed in the Dark Ages, and of course it visits the pub and church in the village.
There is a short section of roadside walking on this route.

A lovely walk. Followed the advice of a previous walker and did it anti clockwise. This left the water until the end which suited me and my Labrador!
Beautiful walk and saw lots of riverside insects. Was a bit overgrown by the water so felt remote. The hills snd scenery was beautiful. Easy to follow. Burial mound interesting. Pub not walkable but did go there to use toilet then drive to start. Lovely walk. No good with buggies or wheelchairs.
Lovely walk, took a lot longer with a pup but she throughly enjoyed 3.5 hours Watch out quite a few crops she wanted to run through. No oportunities for a short sit down and the pub is either at the beginning or the end , and no civilisation to be found on route which some might prefer. Would do again
Lovely walk through stunning countryside, route was very easy to follow. Don’t forget to look back the way you have come when climbing the hills- the views are spectacular!...We did this on a very hot day and were pleased we chose to go clockwise round the route as it meant we did the hilly part first and saved the shady part by the canal for the heat of the day!
Great walk for our first one from the app. Directions were spot on. Only a short bit of road walking although the cyclists on the towpath were going quite fast. Loads of wild flowers and butterflies. We thoroughly enjoyed this walk.
Such an enjoyable walk with vastly different landscapes of chalklands and canalside all in one walk. Lots of wild flowers and birds to look at. We loved it.
Good route with one good hill. Some paths were overgrown and you walk across some livestock fields.

This second route is an epic adventure around this beautiful part of Wiltshire.
You'll walk an extended section of the Mandyke path, climb to the top of Clifford's Hill for some wonderful views and walk a big stretch alongside the Kennet & Avon Canal.
There are some steep drop-offs on this walk as well, so please be careful.

What a fantastic route. Amazing views, lovely canal, not too much climbing, clear paths. One of my favourites from this app so far. Loved it.
Absolutely stunning views. Really well maintained paths which were easy to follow. There are a lot of hills so its a strenuous but excellent walk!
Parking also available at village hall at crossroads if school busy.
We just missed seeing the flax fields as they had already been harvested but a few strays remain. Beautiful chalk flowers on the Wansdyke in summer (July).
