This longer walk at Avebury combines the famous prehistoric stones with a broader sweep of the surrounding downland.

The route follows stretches of the ancient Wessex Ridgeway before climbing onto Avebury Down, where wide views and open grassland give a real sense of space.

It’s a satisfying long walk that mixes deep history with classic chalk landscape, where gentle ridges, big skies and quiet tracks define the character of the route.

Walker review

I couldn’t get parked at Avebury. You need cash for the machines or you have to download a parking app but there is no signal so you can’t download the app. The sign says if you have problems “go to the barn” but the barn doesn’t open till 10.00am - no good if you’ve arrived at 9.00 to beat the crowds!! I parked at the large layby on the A4 by Sillbury Hill where there is a public footpath which takes you to the start of West Kennett Avenue so you are starting a bit earlier than the route describes. Other than the parking issue, this is a lovely extension to your day at Avebury if you are only going to see the stones.

Brilliantly mapped, on a sunny day it wasa dun walk, a bit taxing on the uphill section, overall outstanding though. You can stop at teh National Trust cafe on way back and they have great facilities.

Thoroughly enjoyed this route with fantastic views from the Ridgeway. The walk back into Avebury through the avenue of stones was intriguing and it was quite busy when we got back into Avebury. We thought that the National Trust might have arranged a one-way system to and from the car park as it was sometimes difficult to pass.
