The Wolseley Centre is the headquarters of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and sits beside the River Trent at Wolseley Bridge, between Stafford and Rugeley. The nature reserve is free to visit and has woodland, three lakes, a boardwalk over the pools and display gardens. The short, flat circuit here is a gentle way to enjoy all of it, with water alongside for most of the way and a good chance of seeing kingfishers, herons and other wetland birds.

The grounds were once part of the Wolseley Hall estate, home to the Wolseley family for centuries before the hall was demolished in the mid-20th century. Close by, the Grade II listed Wolseley Bridge carries the A51 over the Trent, and the Trent & Mersey Canal runs through the village. The Wolseley Arms, a short detour from the route, has a story of its own: a plaque records that the canal company's founders met there in the 1760s.

There is a café at the centre overlooking Swan Lake, so you can finish with a hot drink. Paths can be muddy where the ducks and geese gather. For more walks in the county, take a look at the Staffordshire Walks app.

A short, level stroll around the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust's Wolseley Centre nature reserve, with water beside you for almost all of the walk.

The route passes Temple Lake, then comes alongside the River Trent before taking you around the back of Swan Lake. The boardwalk gives views over the pools and the river.

Kingfishers, herons and other wetland birds may be seen, and the ducks and geese are used to people, so some paths can be muddy.

For refreshments, the Kingfisher Café at the start overlooks the lakes and gives plenty of options for food and drink.
