Seven Springs Walks and Route Maps

Seven Springs is a well-used beauty spot on the edge of Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, close to the A513 and with a picnic area at the start. The Chase is the smallest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in mainland Britain, and it is also the largest surviving area of lowland heathland in the Midlands, so a short walk here brings a good mix of heath, woodland and streams.

We have three circular walks from Seven Springs. The shortest, at 1.7 miles, climbs early on and then follows woodland paths, South Street and Old Brook. The middle route, at 3.5 miles, ranges further across the Chase and passes close to The Butts. The longest, at 6.3 miles, follows Sher Brook, visits the wooded valley of Pepper Slade and passes Wolseley Road before returning by South Street and Old Brook.

Cannock Chase has a long history as a hunting ground, and fallow deer are still part of its character. Paths can be rough and muddy after wet weather, so good footwear helps. For more walks like this, take a look at the Staffordshire Walks app.

Seven Springs walk 01

Seven Springs Short Walk

Walk distance
1¾ miles
Time
1 hour
Route type
Circular

A short, compact loop that gives a good taste of Cannock Chase without taking too much time.

It begins at the Seven Springs picnic spot with a fairly steady climb early on, which is the most demanding part, and then settles into easier woodland walking.

It suits a short outing, or an easy introduction to the area, though sturdy footwear is a good idea as the Chase's paths can be rough and muddy after rain.

Seven Springs walk 02

Seven Springs Circular Walk, Cannock Chase

Walk distance
3½ miles
Time
1.5 hours
Route type
Circular

A longer circuit that spends more time out amongst the pretty woodland of the Chase. There is a steady climb in the first part of the walk, after which the going is much gentler.

You pass through the woods of Cannock Chase before joining South Street and following Old Brook back towards the start. It makes a comfortable morning or afternoon, with enough variety of heath, woodland and stream to keep things interesting without being a hard day out.

Seven Springs walk 03

Seven Springs Long Walk

Walk distance
6¼ miles
Time
3 hours
Route type
Circular

The longest of the three, and the one that really gets deep into the Chase from the Seven Springs car park.

It follows Sher Brook and climbs steadily to Pepper Slade, one of the wooded valleys of Cannock Chase. The Butts is passed almost on the path, and Wolseley Road runs just beside the route a little further on.

The Chase is home to fallow deer, and the heathland here is a scarce habitat, so it rewards a slow pace and a watchful eye. Allow about three hours.
