Burrington Combe Walks & Route Map

Burrington Combe is a limestone gorge which is part of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty and offers stunning views for our walks here.

It's a well-known and scenic natural feature, believed to have been formed by water erosion over thousands of years.

Our first route is only short walk but it's packed with geological interest. After a steady climb the route takes you past a number of crags, caves and swallets (underground streams), followed by the lush green Mendip Lodge Wood.

Take care on all of these walks in wetter weather as the route is uneven in places and may be slippery and suitable footwear is advised.

This second route is a longer and more strenuous adventure in this gorgeous area of Somerset.

It involves a lot more climbing than the first route, as it also takes you up to the top of the Black Down hill before heading back down to the start.

You're of course rewarded for your efforts with some fantastic views!

If you really have some more time and energy for your walk, then this third route option is a fabulous adventure that fully explores this beautiful and hilly area.

The route starts similar to walk 2, with a long climb up to the summit of the Black Down. However, instead of descending back down the hill, you'll embark on a journey across the tops of the hills until you reach the summit of another hill - 'Beacon Batch'.

You'll then descend back down the other side of Beacon Batch, before then tackling another hill - 'Burrington Ham' and then working your way back to the start.

This final walk is the ultimate adventure for those of you that want a full day of strenuous walking in this gorgeous hilly area of Somerset (and also those of you that want a pub on the route!)

Like the third route, you'll explore the summits and views of the Black Down, Beacon Batch and Burrington Ham.

However, before that, you'll head off on a long walk to the west, tackling the summit of Dolebury Warren and visiting the pub in Rowberrow.
