Pegwell Bay Walks & Route Maps

This short walk offers a gentle introduction to Pegwell Bay, combining sweeping estuary views with a taste of local history. The Viking Coast Trail runs through this stretch, its path following the shoreline where saltmarsh and mudflats meet wide, open skies. It’s a landscape shaped by tides and centuries of human connection to the coast.

The route also passes through Pegwell Bay Country Park, part of the wider National Nature Reserve. Here, waders and wildfowl can sometimes be spotted on the mudflats, while summer meadows attract butterflies and smaller birds. With its mix of wildlife and scenery, this little route captures the calm, atmospheric character of Kent’s shoreline.

This longer walk at Pegwell Bay links together saltmarsh, meadow, and history in one varied route. It begins in the wide-open views of Pegwell Bay Country Park before moving inland to Stonelees Nature Reserve, where wildflowers and scrub create a haven for birds and insects.

The trail then joins the Viking Coast Trail, following one of the most atmospheric stretches of Kent’s shoreline. A pause at the Viking Ship Café offers a welcome break before reaching the dramatic Hugin Viking Ship, a full-size replica that commemorates Kent’s Norse heritage.

With its mix of scenery, wildlife, and history, this route is rich in character and colour.
