Hertfordshire Walks
Barkway is a long village in the north east of Hertfordshire, close to the Cambridgeshire border, where the countryside opens into gently rolling, farmed land.
It sits on the old route between London and Cambridge, so it has the feel of a place built around travellers, with a main street lined with a mix of cottages and former coaching-style buildings. The village church is a natural point of interest, and you'll find another pretty church on the second route.
We have two separate walks here, ranging from 2.6 to 3.5 miles. Both are straightforward and not hilly, and both follow a stretch of the Hertfordshire Way, the long-distance path that crosses the county.
Each one mixes shaded paths with more open stretches, so there is some variety underfoot without anything demanding.

Barkway walk 01
This first route is a simple and relatively flat countryside ramble in the pretty farmed land to the east of Barkway.
The route is a mixture of shaded and open paths and enjoys a section of the Hertfordshire way.
Barkway walk 02
If you have a bit more time, then the second route heads out to the west of Barkway instead and enjoys a slightly longer walk.
The walk is also a mixture of shaded and open paths and it also enjoys a stretch of the Hertfordshire Way.
The added bonus on this route, is the visit to the village of Reed where there is another pretty church to explore.
Of course, as these two walks are completely separate, you can make a much longer walk by combining both walks into one long adventure.

This is a really lovely walk. The fields were full of wild flowers and grases. It was interesting to go in the two churches.
Delightful walk to Reed Church from Barkway. Buttercups aplenty. Will definitely do this walk again
