Set in peaceful countryside near Brackenfield, Ogston Reservoir is a haven for wildlife and one of the county’s finest birdwatching spots.

The shorter option heads west into open farmland to stretch your legs after time by the water, while the longer of the walks follows quiet lanes and footpaths above the reservoir, passing Holy Trinity Church and enjoying elevated views before descending back to the shoreline.

With tranquil surroundings and excellent opportunities to spot everything from buzzards to wintering gulls, these walks are ideal for nature lovers seeking a calm and rewarding outing.

The beautiful Ogston Reservoir near Brackenfield, owned by SevernTrent Water is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The main attractions of our walks from here are the peacefulness and the wildlife watching opportunities. It is one of Derbyshire's prime bird watching sites where you may spot species such as Osprey,s Buzzards, Shelduck, Teal and Mandarins.

It is also one of the country's best inland sites to watch and record gull's at roost during the winter months.

Our first short walk doesn't actually visit the reservoir itself, but it enables you to stretch your legs slightly after spending some time by the side of the reservoir. It takes you up into the countryside to the west of the reservoir.

The Plough at nearby Brackenfield is a great place to stop for something to eat and drink.

Our second walk from Ogston Reservoir takes you along a quite road besides the reservoir to the lovely Holy Trinity Church from where you continue along quiet country roads, lanes and footpaths above the reservoir giving you pleasant views as you walk.

The final part of the walk takes you mainly downhill back to the reservoir where you can spend time watching the wonderul birds on the water.

The Plough just outside of Brackenfield is a great place to stop for something to eat and drink.

There is a some road walking on quiet coutntry roads with no pavements.

The farm that you pass through was incredibly muddy with cow muck. Not to be done without good boots. Nice walk though, nice views over the valley.
