Derbyshire Walks
Fortyacrepiece takes its name from Forty Acre Piece, one of the conifer woodlands of Matlock Moors, on the high ground above Matlock in Derbyshire. Forestry England describes Matlock Moors as seven coniferous woodlands linked by paths, and these walks give an easy introduction to that quiet, tree-covered landscape.
There are two circular walks on the Derbyshire Walks app, both starting from the same point and both going anticlockwise. The shorter walk, at 1.3 miles, stays among the trees and passes Flash Lane and Forty Acre Piece. The longer one, at 2.6 miles, follows the same early course and then adds Back Lane, Whitesprings Plantation and Wayne Corner Plantation, so you see more of the surrounding woods. Forester's Bar & Restaurant lies a short way off both routes, close to the start.
The walking is gentle, with only slight changes in height, though these are forest paths rather than waymarked trails, so it is worth keeping the route map to hand. Wear sturdy footwear, as woodland ground can stay soft and muddy after rain.

Forty Acre Piece walk 01
A short, easy-going circuit that stays among the conifer plantations of the Forty Acre Plantation from start to finish.
The ground is gentle, with only the slightest rises and falls, so it suits a quick leg-stretch or a relaxed stroll under the trees.
A detour to Forester's Bar & Restaurant is handy if you fancy refreshments as part of your walk.
Forty Acre Piece walk 02
A longer loop through these beautiful plantations, mostly under tree cover and with only a few gentle ups and downs to tackle.
You'll enjoy the woodlands of Forty Acre Piece, Seventy Acre Plantation and Whitesprings Plantation as you walk.
The route passes Forester's Bar & Restaurant towards the end, a short way off the path towards the end for refreshments if required.
