Eldon Hill Walks and Route Maps

Eldon Hill rises above the village of Peak Forest in the Derbyshire White Peak, a rounded limestone dome whose name comes from the Old English for Elves Hill. Its slopes carry the marks of centuries of use, from ancient burial mounds to the limestone quarry that was worked from 1950 until 1999 and is now managed for wildlife.

We have two circular walks here on the Derbyshire Walks app, of 4.7 and 5.1 miles. Both start by Sheepwash Cave, climb gently to the lanes around Old Dam and Perrydale, and return past Snels Low and the Perry Dale bowl barrow and long barrow. Peak Forest, known for its Gretna Green style weddings in the old chapel, lies just off the route.

The longer walk goes right over the top of Eldon Hill and passes Eldon Hole, the largest pothole in Derbyshire and one of the Seven Wonders of the Peak. It is open and unfenced, so take care near the edge. Both routes are open, upland walks with no woodland and little shelter, so wear sturdy footwear and check the weather first.

A circuit of open White Peak limestone country on the flanks of Eldon Hill, setting off past Sheepwash Cave beside the start.

A gentle climb leads out to the lanes around Eldon Lane, Old Dam and Perrydale, the old settlement from which Peak Forest grew.

From there a steadier, moderate climb takes you onto higher ground and the most open part of the walk. On the way back you pass Snels Low, a hill where a possible barrow is recorded, and then the Perry Dale bowl barrow and long barrow, a scheduled ancient monument a short way off the path.

There is no woodland and little shelter, so it suits a clear day and sturdy footwear.

This is an extension to the first route that also goes right up to the summit of Eldon Hill, a rounded limestone dome in the White Peak.

It starts beside Sheepwash Cave and climbs gently to the lanes around Eldon Lane, Old Dam and Perrydale, with Peak Forest village just off the route.

The highlight is the steep pull that follows. Close to the top you pass Eldon Hole, the largest pothole in Derbyshire and one of the traditional Seven Wonders of the Peak. It is open and unfenced, so keep well back from the edge and keep children and dogs close. The summit of Eldon Hill comes just after, with its former quarry workings nearby.

The return passes Snels Low, where a possible barrow is recorded, and the Perry Dale bowl barrow and long barrow. Expect one steep climb and open, exposed ground, so choose a clear day.
