Bakewell is a busy Derbyshire town on the River Wye, with a good choice of pubs, cafés and restaurants for before or after a walk. It also makes a handy base for walking, with routes setting off in several directions into woods, riverside and open countryside.

We have five Bakewell walks on the Derbyshire Walks app, ranging from 2.7 to 7 miles. The shorter circuits head up through the woods of the Haddon Estate and come back past Castle Hill, where the earthwork remains of a 12th-century Norman castle can still be traced. The gentlest option goes out to Hassop Station and its café, returning beside the River Wye and the Derwent.

For a longer day, two routes continue to the village of Edensor and, on the longest walk, the Chatsworth information point beside the Derwent. Most of the routes meet the Monsal Trail, the abandoned railway line, near the edge of Bakewell. Several of them start with a steep climb out of town, so choose according to how much height you fancy.
