Walk information
This first route is one of our shorter walks from Amberley station. This walk heads north along the lovely River Arun and then loops back through countryside and quiet country lanes, visiting the village of Amberley on the way.
The route passes a pub in Amberley and there is another pub next to Amberley Station for refreshments.

Lovely gentle walk with only one long uphill stretch towards the end. Amberley ...village is a hidden gem from the past
Great walk, but super muddy and flooded, we had to go off the path and find our own way, 3/4 through it and it then started raining
Part of this route went across a flooded plain (where you leave the river) which was a bit tricky and definitely needed proper footwear! There is a steep hill near the end but it is on a road so not too bad. The Bridge Inn near the station was pretty and welcoming and the food was delicious.
If there has been heavy rain over the previous few days then even wellies may be no good for this.Save this one for the drier times.
Walk information
This second option is a longer walk that enjoys a big loop of extra walking alongside the River until you reach the village of South Stoke. It then works its way back to the start through pretty countryside.
There is a pub in the village of Houghton, just a short detour from the route.

A fantastic walk. Had a lovely time, the middle of the flood meadow was super saturated so we carreid the small dog and laughed alot, our advise is if its rained alot recently then take wellies. The local in store in Amberley is a real treat for the eyes and the staff are... very friendly.
Lovely, although slightly overpriced, Sunday lunch at The George and Dragon. Walk was good, certainly not a new favourite, but nice enough that we’ll revisit at some point. Very little litter or dog mess and the route was easy to follow.
Appropriate footwear unless its been dry for a week!
Really lovely walk not too hilly. Ended at the cafe which was needed.
You need to know whether the tide will be in or not as the path was under water when we went for a walk as the tide was rising and good walking boots with high sides or wellington boots are needed.
Walk information
This third option is the one for you if you really want a work out, whilst enjoying a wonderfully varied walk in the South Downs. One half of the walk is effectively the first route, enjoying the River Arun and the village of Amberley with it's pub.
However, this extended walk then takes you on a glorious loop up into the Downs themselves along the South Downs Way. This extra section has a fair bit of climbing, but you will be rewarded for your efforts with some lovely views.

Great walk and a good workout.......the waterlogged field before crossing the rail line was an interesting challenge - but was only a short distance.......On the decent from Amberley Mount where the route pinches in by some woodland, the path to the left we were meant to take was completely overgrown, so we took the right path and cut back across (alternative route was displayed on the map - so not a major issue)
The footpath to Amberley is closed so we had to go back. It is a wetland in part and you really need wellies. The shop and pub in Amberly were closed. Not a great walk but it should be.
Worth the climb on a clear day! Great views and an abundance of birds and wildlife. Look out for those Hares!
Park in Amberley station car park as its free. Route is easy to follow and the walk through Amberley village is as picture perfect as you can get. Views from the top of of the downs are amazing. Highly recommended. Would be very difficult with a buggy or wheelchair due to the uneven nature of the downs paths.

This final route is for those of you that want a truly epic adventure workout in this lovely part of the South Downs national park. It enjoys a very long stretch of walking alongside the River Arun, as well as lots of hilly walking in the South Downs with majestic views.
You really will need your energy for this long walk, and there is a nice pub in the village of Amberley if you need refreshments.

This is a great walk. Amazing views. There are many different ways one can walk. Can cut it short or make it longer at many locations. But sadly there were many areas with overgrown vegetation. Huge nettles and spikey raspberry bushes were the biggest problem!. Apart from that it was a great walk.
