Kent Walks
These walks explore the dramatic landscapes of the Wye National Nature Reserve in the Kent Downs.
Steep chalk slopes, dry valleys, and open ridge paths make for an energetic but rewarding outing with far-reaching views across the surrounding countryside.
The shorter route focuses on the reserve and nearby Puckersdane Scrubs, while the longer walk adds a visit to Wye village, a stop at The New Flying Horse, and a climb up to the Wye Crown before continuing across the wider Downs.
These walks offer a great mix of natural scenery, local landmarks, and classic chalk downland walking.

This short walk explores the heart of the Wye National Nature Reserve, where steep chalk slopes and hidden valleys open up to wide views across the Kent Downs.
The route also goes through Puckersdane Scrubs, an area of rough grass and thorny bushes that brings even more wildlife to the Downs.

A pub halfway along the route in Wye adds a welcome pause before the path climbs to the Wye Crown, a striking chalk figure first carved in 1902 to celebrate King Edward VII’s coronation.
The walk closes with the wide ridges of Wye Downs itself, shaped by Ice Age geology and centuries of grazing.

First-hand experiences
Absolutely stunning walk. Just a note that the route takes you through a field about half way round, just before you get to the Widnesborough Rehab Hospital. The route on the app takes you right through the middle of the field, which looked to have been recently ploughed. There was no path or trail indicators so we considered it rude to walk through the field. This took us around the edge of the field where we found a gate with an official yellow route marker on. This took us slightly off the trail on the app which was very safe as you could see where we were in relation to the apps route, we went no more than 10 minutes off course. Just over half way, there is a lovely pub called The New Flying Horse. I did not see anyone eating, but it was very picturesque
