Essex Walks
From historic streets to rolling countryside, these walks around Saffron Walden offer two very different but equally rewarding experiences.
The longer of the walks is a truly big day out, heading south through the impressive Audley End Estate before looping across open farmland and gentle hills along sections of the Saffron Trail and Harcamlow Way, passing through Newport and Wendens Ambo on the way.
In contrast, the shorter option keeps things closer to home with a heritage trail around the town itself, taking in the museum, castle ruins, market square and the magnificent parish church.
Whether you’re in the mood for an epic countryside ramble or a relaxed wander through centuries of history, these walks showcase the very best of town and country in one beautiful corner of Essex.

Walk information
This short walk is the Saffron Walden Town Heritage Trail that takes you on a walk around some of the historically important parts of this pretty market town.
You will visit the museum and castle ruins, the market square where markets are still held, the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin and a number of charming old pubs on this route.

This is a long and epic adventure around the countryside surrounding Saffron Waldon.
It heads south through the lovely Audley End Estate (you can explore the estate further for a fee) and then takes you on a big countryside loop.
The loop takes you through mainly open farmland and over gentle hills, travelling along parts of the Saffron Trail and the Harcamlow Way, and visits the villages of Newport and Wendens Ambo on the way.
There is a section of roadside walking on the route, so please be careful here and as it's a very long walk, please only use the app when absolutely necessary for navigation and ideally take some alternative navigation with you.
