A rewarding ridge and countryside walk between Chiseldon and Aldbourne, combining a stretch of disused railway path with a steady climb up onto Whitefield Hill.

Across all options, these walks include some exposed sections and a busy road crossing, but the effort is well rewarded with wide views and a satisfying sense of exploration through this part of the Wiltshire downs.

This is a lovely walk in the majestic downs that you'll find between Chiseldon and Aldbourne.

Even though it's our shortest route, it still requires quite an effort with a long walk along the disused railway line and then a trek up onto Whitefield Hill, before working your way back to the start through lovely countryside.

Of course, you will be rewarded with some wonderful views and a lot of fresh air.

There is a very busy road to cross on the route, so please be careful.

Walker review

First attempt at this new route and I will be back to try out the longer versions. Lovely farm shop at the start/finish. It has been dry for a few weeks so it was solid under foot but it did look like it could be muddy in places. One steep climb but worth the amazing views from the top of the downs. One field of unimpressed cows who were obviously used to visitors. I went anti clockwise and found the last half a mile a bit scary as although the road wasn’t busy it was fast with no real path. As the instructions say be careful of the main road which has to be crossed in two places.

This is an extension of the first route for those of you that want to stretch your legs a little bit more.

This route is effectively the same as the first route, but it extends the walk to visit the village of Upper Upham and enjoys more undulating countryside with lovely views as you go.

A good walk overall. Part of the walk at the end is on the road and felt a bit unsafe as there’s a fair amount of traffic coming along and drivers do not slow down!

A lot of road noise at the beginning of the walk, but once across the main road it was quieter. Did the walk after it had been raining, so it was very muddy and slippy in places. Some steep hills, but overall a good walk.

Absolutely brilliant walk with spot on instructions. The only negative is the unavoidable 20m walk along the A342 facing oncoming cars travelling at 60mph. Whilst a very short section it was quite terrifying as you have to walk in the road.

This longest route extends the walk even further to create a truly epic adventure in these wonderful hills.

This walk takes you even further past the village of Upper Upham, until it nearly reaches Aldbourne, and then it loops back to joint the main route.

Great varied terrain with some far reaching views. Three trees cafe at the start and end has a farm shop, cafe, toilets and free parking.
