Sussex Walks
These walks explore the scenic countryside and historic streets around the market town of Midhurst in Sussex.
From a short loop visiting Cowdray Castle and the town itself, to longer routes that wander along the River Rother, through Midhurst Common, and into surrounding woodlands, the walks offer a mix of riverside paths, woodland trails, and open countryside.
The longest route combines the best sections of the others for a full countryside adventure, while all options reward you with the chance to enjoy the town’s pubs, cafés, and eateries either during or after your walk.

This is lovely short stroll from the wonderful town of Midhurst.
This simple loop takes you to visit the Cowdray Castle where there's a tea room in the walled garden.
It also takes you on a wander through the beautiful town itself where there are plenty of pubs and eateries to enjoy.

This second route option heads west from the market town of Midhurst on an adventure alongside the River Rother (if you walk anticlockwise).
It then heads south and deep into the pretty woodland of Midhurst Common before bringing you back into Midhurst for a lovely stroll through it's historic streets.

Lovely walk - busy road to cross, nice pubs at the end of it all - lots of nettles so kids were on shoulders some of the way, saw deer, lizards and a kingfisher

This third route takes you on an adventure in the opposite direction to the second option.
If you walk clockwise, it heads east, visiting the remains of Cowdray Castle, before joining King John's Walk and heading into the woodland around West Lavington where you'll enjoy the Serpent Trail.
There is a short section of footpath/roadside walking towards the end of the walk as it takes you back into the pretty market town for a lovely historic stroll back to the car park.

Great walk, no mud. Easy with the dog as no stiles. Toilets available in the car park. Pub on route and cafes and pubs in Midhurst

This final route option is basically the best of the second and third walk routes joined together to create an epic adventure in the countryside around Midhurst.
The walk doesn't take you through the town itself, but we would recommend popping into the centre after your walk to enjoy some of the lovely eateries, cafes, hotels and pubs on offer.

The southern half of the route was excellently maintained, lovely paths snd easy to navigate. The part north of Midhurst was particularly overgrown especially alongside the river - but I’m building up a resilience to nettle stings!
