Friends Clump Walks & Route Maps

This short walk around Friends Clump offers a compact introduction to the edge of Ashdown Forest.

It begins by Nutley Windmill, a Grade II listed post mill dating from 1835 and one of the oldest working mills in Sussex.

The route then opens onto the Forest’s distinctive heathland, internationally recognised for its wildlife habitats, before reaching Friends Clump, a small group of Scots pines planted in 1940 to mark the 21st birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.

It’s a gentle, scenic stroll with heritage landmarks.

This longer walk around Friends Clump explores some of the most distinctive corners of Ashdown Forest.

It begins near Nutley Windmill, a Grade II listed post mill built in 1835 and still in working order.

From there, the route stretches out across the Forest’s wide heathland, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation.

It finally reaches Camp Hill, one of the higher points in the landscape.
