Essex Walks
Set on the banks of the River Colne, the characterful town of Wivenhoe is the starting point for these walks, all rich in waterside scenery and coastal charm.
The shorter route is a gentle, family-friendly stroll along the quay and through Ferry Marsh nature reserve, with a small section in Wivenhoe Woods and plenty of cafés and pubs close by.
The longer of the walks extend your time beside the Colne estuary, with one route adding a deeper exploration of Wivenhoe Woods and another heading east into open countryside and quiet lanes for wider views.
With Wivenhoe railway station conveniently located in town, these walks offer a wonderful mix of river, woodland and village atmosphere, all easily accessible for a relaxed day out.

Walk information
This is a lovely short family-friendly stroll from the town of Wivenhoe.
The route is mainly riverside with a walk alongside the quay and River Colne, but it also walks through the Ferry marsh Nature Reserve and also through a short section of the Wivenhoe Woods.
There are plenty of refreshment options on the route in the town.

This second route is basically an extension of the first route that enjoys a much longer stretch of walking alongside the River Colne, and then also enjoys a majestic stroll through the Wivenhoe Woods, making this a lovely varied walk.
There are plenty of pubs in the town if you want to make this a thoroughly enjoyable pub walk.

This slightly longer route option heads in the opposite direction to the other two routes.
It takes you east out of Wivenhoe and includes the River Colne estuary, open countryside, lanes and lovely views.
There is some road walking on this route and if you fancy a drink on the quayside, why not pop into the Rose and Crown pub.

Lovely mix of riverside and woodland.
One part of the walk went cross country and was very overgrown with grass, nettles and thorns, so had to use a stick to push them to the side. Aside this a very pleasant walk, even though it was 27 degrees! Some shade on walk
Part of walk was inaccessible due to flooding otherwise perfect.
