Essex Walks
Connected to the mainland at Leigh by a bridge, Two Tree Island is a 257-hectare nature reserve and haven for wildfowl and wading birds.
These walks explore different corners of the island, from the eastern marshes to the western lagoons, each offering wide estuary views and fantastic wildlife-spotting opportunities.
You can choose to focus on one side of the reserve or combine both into a figure-of-eight route that takes in the whole landscape.
Whichever option you pick, these walks provide a refreshing coastal escape with big skies and an ever-changing natural backdrop.

Walk information
Two Tree Island is a small island covering 257 hectares and is connected to the mainland at Leigh by a bridge.
It is also a nature reserve and a refuge for a huge variety of wildfowl and waders. This first short route explores the eastern side of the island.

First-hand experiences
Can’t belive I live so close but have never been here before. We went at dusk as we were hoping to spot an owl. Lots of birds around and we saw loads of barn swallows. Only thing to be careful of if you have a dog there are adders around and part of the route is through really long grass so we were nervous with our dog. The other thing that put me off was the car park as a few unsavoury characters around. A shame as it is a lovely walk.

This is the second route option on Two Tree Island which basically explores the west side the island and allows you to enjoy even more wildlife in this intriguing nature reserve.

We went on a summers day and it was really lovely. It’s a popular route as lots of people walking dogs but some nice views and lots of benches where you can sit and enjoy the views.

This final route option is basically both of the first two routes added together to create a figure of eight walk that explores the whole of the Nature Reserve on Two Trees Island.
